Smith, S (1977). The golden fantasy: A regressive reaction to separation anxiety. International Journal of Psychoanalysis, 58, 311-324

Smith introduces the golden fantasy, a "simple and familiar", yet incredibly resistant fantasy manifested in analysis with many patients. Smith conceptualizes the golden fantasy as the "wish to have all of one's needs met in a relationship hallowed by perfection", and refers to Mahler's developmental stages to trace the origins of this fantasy (p.311).
